Reminder Information for the 2016-2017 School Year!
PTO
Today you received a PTO form in your folder. Please sign up for PTO!! It not only helps my classroom but also the school. All the money that is given to the school is used for your child(ren)'s classrooms and environment. My personal homeroom goal is to get 80% of my homeroom to sign up! The school goal is to get at least 75%. There are many incentives for homerooms who reach this goal as well, as the school reaching their goal.
Volunteer Training
All volunteers must be volunteered trained at the beginning of every school year. It takes 48 hours for Fulton County Schools to process the request, so please make sure you complete this process. Here is the link...http://www.fcsvolunteers.org/users/join
Food Policy
We have several students who have severe allergies. Make sure to send the food label with the ingredients 48 hours in advance, so I may send the label to the rest of the homeroom.
Room ParentsThe PTO is making a slight change to the room reps this year. In the past we have ask for parents to sign up to be either an Academic Room Rep or a Social Room Rep. This year, we are doing away with those distinctions. We are seeking 2 co-room reps for each homeroom. It will then be up to the 2 room reps to divide up duties as they see fit. At this moment, I only have one parent who has signed up to assist in these areas. Please consider being the other room parent, I would REALLY appreciate it!
Attendance
Last year, around 50% of the BFES student body was absent for 10 or more days. Excessive absences directly correlates to not only class success, but also success on the GA Milestones. Please keep this in mind when scheduling activities that overlap with school time.

Year 2 BFES Introduction
Good Afternoon!
My name is Ms. Ryan and I am so excited to continue being apart of the Birmingham Falls family this year! This is my second year at BFES. I learned so much last year, and I know this upcoming year is going to be even more incredible. There are a few new changes in 5th grade this year. I will be teaching all subjects, which is a different experience from last year when I was only teaching Humanities. This opportunity will allow me to have a more personal interaction with my students, as well as their parents. I am a goal-oriented teacher, so my first goal is to learn everyone's name by day 2. Last year my goal was by day 3, which was too easy. I learned long ago the best impression I can make to my students on the first few days of school was to learn their names. I know some students and parents will visit this blog after speaking to me in order to learn more about me and where I come from. First, I have two dogs (technically my parent's dogs). The one is the red bandana is Denali and the one in the blue bandana is Glacier. I love them tremendously and they are irresistible! I talk about them a lot during our Lucy Calkins time because they are apart of many small moments in my life. Second, I am originally from New Jersey, however I completed high school at Roswell High School. I completed my bachelor's degree at the College of Charleston and my master's degree from the University of Georgia. Third, I spent some time working at Haynes Bridge Middle School where I taught 6th and 7th grade Reading for the 2014-2015 school year. This job gave me an opportunity to enlighten my 5th grade students and parents about the expectations for middle school. Lastly, I am recently engaged, so not only will I be planning for school but also for a wedding next June.
This school year is crucial for student success in middle school as well as their future. I believe in teaching students beyond the standards. I want to ensure all students leave my classroom with skills that help them become even better versions of themselves. Three things your child will undoubtedly learn this school year is
1) Accountability
2) Time Management
3) Personal Responsibility
My expectations this year are....
1) To make it the best elementary school year yet and prepare every student for middle school!
2) To ensure every student feels smart throughout the school year.
3) To strengthen all aspects of your learning!
4) To read various texts and make connections!
5) To learn about crucial parts of history that influences our lives today.
See you soon!
