Social Studies Book Online

Good Morning,

Due to the fact this is a public blog, I need to be generic about how to access the online textbook. If you go to our website, hit the students tab, go to resources, then click the S.S textbook. You can enter

Username: grade5civilwar
Password: 123456

This is a great source to use, especially since we won't be able to assign textbooks until all student changes are permanent. I am unsure when this will be, however the online book is the best option we have right now so I can complete other things in class.

10 Day Count Isn't Just for Enrollment Numbers

Good Evening Everyone,

We did it! Your children and I  have completed our first 10 days of 5th grade! I am exhausted after this week, but I am still looking forward to Monday. You know you love your job when you are ready to collapse and sleep on a Friday, yet you can't wait for Monday. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the parents in my homeroom, Block 1, and Block 2. Now that I have mastered the kid's names and face, I am ready to connect student faces with parents. I graded ALL of the completed vocabulary quizzes from today and entered them into the grade book. They will be going home tomorrow. I am proud to say I read part of my story to my students today. I wasn't sure if they were going to be critical of my work, however I felt if I provided the example then they would share their own stories eventually. In class next week, we are continuing our exploration of knowledge through the Civil War. My students have been working diligently on their study guides. Hopefully Monday we will be able to checkout books. The students also have their F.I.B note sheet (fill in the blank) for S.S. It has every piece of wonderful information they will need to study.  We are going to dive deeply into major battles/campaigns and some pretty significant people in history. Our vocabulary quiz will be over different words using prefixes such as mono-, bi-, and tri-. I felt it was necessary to include some useful Language Arts information in order to extend their knowledge of English terms. I heard today from the TAG teacher that TAG will start next week! I am still learning what that entails, but I am sure it will be very exciting for everyone involved. Lastly, please bring in Tybee money if you want to go on the trip. The money is due 8/28. I would hate for a student to be upset because the money wasn't turned in on time. I must say that I am beyond excited to go on the trip. I always find those trips educational and fun. I will definitely be doing all the interactive things too. Below is the information for Remind 101, an app where I can send text message alerts. Only subscribe to the particular alerts you need.

First Week is Done!

Good Evening!

Woohoo!! We have made it through our first week of 5th grade. I am so thankful for everyone at BFES who welcomed me and made me feel comfortable during my week. We got a lot done for the first week of school. It hardly feels like the school year started five days ago. Today the students took their first Word Study quiz over some Civil War vocabulary. They rocked it!!!! It is a wonderful feeling to put triple digit grades into the gradebook. I was quite impressed by how well the students retained the information. I know learning about the Civil War can be dry information to a few students, however we are one step closer to discussing historical events that occurr
ed closer to this century where the students can actually make connections to the information. I already made more copies of the F.I.B (fill in the blank) note sheets for the next few lessons we will be covering, which go more in depth to the specifics of the Civil War and introduction of Abraham Lincoln. The one note I want to stress to my students and parents is that I expect the best work from my students. I know there are times where everyone will feel lazy, but it is important to stay focused and bring me your best work. I know with the F.I.B notes this week that I saw several students rushing to complete it and had to send them back to look over various questions because they didn't read the sentence carefully. The best way to learn history is to view it as a story that is always continuing.


Overall, I am incredibly proud of my students and am thankful they are in my class. I know several have already made an impact on my life and I will never forget them! Next week we are also beginning the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop. It is new to BFES and already has potential to be a wonderful program to help students not be so angry/scared/bored by writing. I, too, will be purchasing a notebook and writing in class! I am very excited for the rest of the school year and all the wonderful possibilities that will come my way.

Day 2 of the Best Year Ever!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

It is now the end of day 2 and I feel great. I am so glad I made the decision to come to BFES. It truly is the best! Yesterday we had a wonderful day where I ALMOST learned the name of every single one of my students. I am determined to master all names in my homeroom, Block 1, and Block 2. The first day of school mostly consisted of learning names, getting to know my students, and explained the purpose of my class. I am proud that I can put a name to a face now. We hit the ground running today and we started our Civil War unit. I started reading a book outloud to them to hook interest, then we discussed the differences between historical fiction, fiction, and non-fiction. I was incredibly impressed by my students' ability to come up with higher level questions during a K-W-L activity about the Civil War. The students seem very interested in the material and enjoyed my approach to explaining the vocabulary words in ways that relate to their lives. This week we will continue our exploration through different aspects of the Civil War as well analyzing different aspects of the material.  I can't believe tomorrow is Wednesday already! REMINDERS for my students in Block 1 and Block 2:
8/14 (This Friday) Quiz in Social Studies on vocabulary words (Tariff, States’ Rights, Sectionalism, Abolitionist, discrimination, underground railroad, slave state)


Block 1 did not get the F.I.B (fill in the blank) note sheet today. They will receive it tomorrow. We talked at length about the vocabulary words. Tomorrow we will pick up where we left off.

Block 2 was not able to finish the F.I.B note sheet or the chapter today. We will finish those tomorrow and continue where we left off.
